Welcome!
So you want to learn more about how my R2 Unit was built? Well first of all you should know that every Droid is a unique creation of its builder. They can be made of steel, aluminum, wood, or plastic, or any combination of the above. My particular Droid is a hybrid of aluminum and styrene plastic. He weighs about 150 pounds and is fully mobile with working lights, sound, and dome rotation. He also has animated dome and body panels as well as utility arms (the blue ones on the front of his body). In addition he is 2-3-2 capable, meaning he can retract his center leg and stand on two legs! Because he has motors in his leg joints he can also perform specialized motions such as standing on his toes or looking down. It took about 4 years to get R2 to his current build state, but there is always something to add, so he'll never really be finshed. |
Building R2 was a giant learning experience for me. If you'd told me when I started, that 4 years later I'd own a CNC Router and would be able to program in two languages, I'd have said you were crazy.
If you're STILL not satisfied and would like to learn more about R2's build, the buttons below will take you to different pages that describe the process in detail. I'd suggest you start with the dome, as that's where I began his build. Have fun! |
